Gender is not based on biology, rather it is the feeling that we belong to a particular sex. Gender identity encompasses an individual’s feelings about who they are and how they identify. A gender identity service provides help and support for anyone who is concerned about their gender identity, this might include counselling, sexual health clinics, surgical procedures and support transitioning from one gender to another.

As NHS Grampian’s Gender Identity Clinic Service continues to develop, together we are evaluating the impact of GP training in Gender Identity awareness. Additional projects are focusing on reviewing mental health co-morbidities in users of Gender Identity Services and awareness of Gender Identity Issues in those who do not use services directly.
