The Human Factor in Agriculture
Farming is a high risk occupation, with an average of 30 to 33 fatalities in the UK each year. High risk industries such as aviation, offshore drilling, nuclear power and healthcare have identified the importance of non-technical skills for good work performance and reducing the risk of an accident.
The aim of this interview study was to identify non-technical skills that are typically used by farmers, both when working alone and as part of a team.
The results indicated that farmers used non-technical skills during a variety of tasks, and that these skills were particularly important when dealing with issues and problems. Team non-technical skills were identified as: situation awareness, decision-making, leadership, teamwork and task management. Lone worker non-technical skills were identified as: situation awareness, decision-making and task management.
